There are plenty of gamblers out there in the world. However only a small portion are able to win and continue doing so on a regular basis. This isn’t simply due to skill or luck however. It’s also achieved through a particular mindset, a set of mental tactics that, one could say, are a solid part of most winning formulas.
Some may come naturally, though all can be gained, and strengthened, through practice.
Discipline
Discipline is the ability to dependably control one’s thoughts, emotions, routines, and actions, and you won’t find many pro-gamblers that don’t have extreme self-discipline.
In general, this can be understood in terms of self knowledge, restraint, diligence, and control. When it comes to gambling, though, it applies mainly to the following:
- Sticking to responsible and smart gambling routines and habits, e.g., setting loss limits and controlling the time spent on gambling.
- Following through with plans and strategy without unnecessary deviation.
- Making choices based on knowledge, skill, and logic, rather than emotion, or ego.
Preparation
Winning gamblers will generally be prepared for every possible outcome of their chosen game, whether it be in winning or losing.
This comes from practice and experience, as well as a deep and thorough understanding of the factors involved, such as odds, probability, house edge, and so on. Likewise, pro-gamblers generally have an in-depth knowledge of the rules and the various strategies and systems of their game, and know exactly what works and what doesn’t.
Focus
Gambling to win, and the skill, strategy, and preparation involved, requires every bit of concentration and focus available in order to maximise their benefits.
There is always opportunity for distraction and diversion around every corner. Successful gamblers therefore have the ability to keep their eyes and minds on the game at all times, while ignoring and avoiding unnecessary distraction.
This is very much a mental exercise that one can, and should, practice to improve, and is intrinsic with the other vital mental tactics discussed in this article.
Perfectionism
Like all great artists, athletes, and professionals, pro-gamblers spend an unusual amount of time, energy, and attention on perfecting the fine aspects of their game.
They are also constantly in search of new ways to improve and increase their skill and knowledge, and ability to win.
Determination
Determination and will-power, and also self-confidence, ambition, or drive, etc, can be a double-edged sword. In one regard it is vital to achieving success, and on the other hand, when driven by e.g., negative emotions, ignorance, and petty ego, it can swiftly lead to disaster.
Winning gamblers are able to recognise their weaknesses, limits, and strengths, and form a winning attitude, to drive and motivate them to success.
“Loss” is simply an inevitable part of gambling, and, in a sense, this is exactly what “winning gamblers” have gained confidence and mastery over.
Knowing oneself, and practicing all the vital mental tactics discussed here, allow one to know when to quit, when to take risks, and in the end, how to win.
